What daisy means
You will meet the family under names such as Brandy Daisy, Gin Daisy or Tequila Daisy, with the spirit placed first. The same three parts show up in each one: spirit, lemon juice and a sweetener that is not plain syrup.
The orange liqueur is the change. It supplies the sweetness and an orange note where a sour would use sugar syrup. Old recipes add only a splash of soda, about 0.33 oz (10 ml), so the drink stays short.
Many people assume a daisy is sweetened with grenadine. The first daisies used orange liqueur, and grenadine only took over in the early 1900s. A grenadine daisy is therefore the later version, not the original one.
How to make a daisy
Shake the spirit, lemon juice and orange liqueur with ice, then pour it over crushed ice or strain it up into a coupe.
- 1.Add 2 oz (60 ml) spirit, 0.75 oz (22 ml) lemon juice and 0.75 oz (22 ml) orange liqueur to a shaker with ice.
- 2.Shake hard until the tin is cold.
- 3.Strain over crushed ice, or up into a chilled coupe.
- 4.Top with only a splash of soda water, about 0.33 oz (10 ml).
Daisy compared
- SourA sour is sweetened with sugar syrup. A daisy uses orange liqueur or grenadine, and old recipes add a splash of soda.
- MargaritaA margarita is tequila, lime and orange liqueur, so it is a daisy made with tequila. The name means daisy in Spanish.
- FizzA fizz is a sour topped with plenty of soda and served without ice. A daisy gets only a splash.
- CosmopolitanCosmopolitan follows the daisy pattern: spirit, orange liqueur and lime, with cranberry juice added. The match is in the recipe, not in its history.
