Averna is a Sicilian amaro from Caltanissetta, first made by Salvatore Averna in 1868, with a dark, bittersweet taste of citrus peel, herbs and caramel. It is sweeter and heavier than many amari, which is why it is the classic choice for a Black Manhattan.
