What Stamped ice means
A stamped cube is mostly about looks, since the design sits on top of the ice where you can see it. It suits a drink served on the rocks in a rocks glass, where the top of the cube stays in view. Without the design, the cube is just a cube, so the mark is what makes it stamped ice.
A common belief is that the stamp must be heated before each use. That is a myth. A room-temperature brass stamp melts the design into the ice by passing its heat into the surface it touches, so you only need to press it.
The stamp works by melting, not cutting. Press it on the top of a cube for 2 to 3 seconds, and the ice under the design melts into a clean mark. A stamp that cools between cubes works less well, so warm it up before a batch. Wintersmiths, which makes brass ice stamps, says its stamps are built for a lifetime of use, with designs engraved 1/8 in (3.2 mm) deep.
How to make stamped ice at home
You need a clear cube with a flat top, a brass ice stamp, and a cube wide enough for the logo you pick.
- 1.Start with a clear ice cube or an ice sphere that has a flat top.
- 2.Match the stamp to the cube. A 1.5 in (38 mm) logo needs a cube at least 1.75 in (44 mm) wide. A 2 in (51 mm) logo needs one at least 2.375 in (60 mm) wide.
- 3.Press the room-temperature brass stamp firmly on the ice for 2 to 3 seconds.
- 4.Rest the stamp on a warm surface or in warm water between cubes when you stamp a batch.
Stamped ice compared
- Clear iceStamped ice is a design pressed into a cube's top. Clear ice is the base it needs, because cloudy ice hides the design.
- Logo ice moldA mold freezes the design into the ice. A stamp melts it into a finished cube in seconds.
