What hurricane glass means

You meet this glass at tiki bars and in drinks like the Hurricane and the Pina Colada, both big tropical drinks served over ice. The top stays open for a fruit garnish and a straw, so the drink can be dressed up without crowding the glass.

A Cosmopolitan does not go in this glass. It is served up, so it belongs in a martini glass, which holds small drinks without ice. The hurricane is the opposite case: it is a large drink over ice, so the bowl needs to be big.

The glass is named for its hurricane-lamp shape and for the drink. The Hurricane was served at Pat O'Brien's bar in New Orleans in the 1940s, in lamp-shaped glasses, and that is where the two names meet.

How to serve a drink in a hurricane glass

Hurricanes are big drinks over ice, so start with a full glass of ice before anything else.

  1. 1.Fill the glass with crushed or cubed ice, then pour the drink over it.
  2. 2.Leave space at the top for a fruit garnish and a straw.
  3. 3.Choose a large tropical or frozen drink for this glass, since the bowl is made for volume.
